Hartford Rotary Student of the Month Article – October 2015

The Hartford Rotary Club and Hartford Union High School are pleased to

announce that Melissa Clement, Elisha Jaeke, and Bradley Lorrigan were honored

recently as Rotary Students of the Month. The students were given special recognition

for their accomplishments at the Hartford Rotary Club's Thursday noon meetings during

the month of October.

Melissa Clement is the daughter of Janet Libby and Dick Clement. Clement has

been active in different activities at HUHS the past four years. During her four years

serving on the student council, she has chaired four penny drives, the proceeds of which

went to battle Leukemia and Lymphoma; organized a Powder puff charity game, earning

more than 300 canned goods for the food pantry; and implemented the annual Giving

Tree and worked at the student council blood drives. Clement is also a student athlete

running on the girl's cross-country team for HUHS. Clement is a member of the National

Honor Society where she was awarded the Key Award for service and academics this

past year. She is a member of the Concert Choir, the Model United Nations Club and

you may have seen her as the White Witch of Narnia or Anne Gilbreth in Cheaper by the

Dozen in recent spring plays at HUHS.

Clement has given back to her community by volunteering her time at her Church,

St. Mary of the Hill Parish, serving as a lector and the first ever student communications

coordinator to the Parish Council. Additionally she has volunteered over 80 hours in a

local nursing home, helping the residents to be more mobile and to play Bingo. During

the summer, Clement keeps busy donating more than 140 hours of volunteer work to a

girl formation camp as a program aide.

Clement is undecided on a major area of study. She may pursue a career as an

entrepreneur, or a double major in Marketing/English with a minor in Spanish. At the

present time, Clement is planning to attend St. Norbert College, UW-Steven's Point, or

UW-Madison.

Elisha Jaeke is the daughter of Tim and Laurel Jaeke. She has been active in co-

curricular activities at Hartford Union High School. Jaeke has participated in track and

field, Forensics, the Math Team, the Model United Nations Club, the HUHS Concert

Choir and has been a cast member for the past four fall musicals at Hartford. She serves

as an officer of the National Honor Society and is the current President of the HUHS

Student Council.

Jaeke has been on the High Honor Roll all four years at Hartford, and was

recently named an AP Scholar with Honor. She won a Tommy Award for Outstanding

Supporting Performer for the 2014 fall musical and was nominated for the Tommy

Award for Outstanding Lead Performer as Dorothy for the 2015 fall musical The Wizard

of Oz. Jaeke has been selected three times for the WSMA State Honors Choir and this

past summer; she served as a delegate to Badger Girls State.

Jaeke has given back to her community by volunteering her time with the "Read

to Succeed" program through Casa Guadalupe, the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in

Slinger, the Aurora Adult Day Center in Hartford, and serving as a cantor at St. Kilian

Catholic Church.

Jaeke plans to major in Biochemistry and minor in Spanish with the hope of going

on to medical school. Her ultimate dream is to volunteer through the program "Doctors

Without Borders" in a Spanish speaking country.

Bradley Lorrigan is the son of Jim and Karen Lorrigan. Lorrigan has been

active in co-curricular activities at Hartford. He has been a member of the boy's

basketball and baseball programs at Hartford every year, earning varsity letters in both

sports during his junior year. Lorrigan is a member of the H-Club, the National Honor

Society, and currently serves as President of Skills USA. Last spring, Lorrigan took first

place in 3D Printing and Design at the Skills USA State competition. He also was

recently named an AP Scholar with Honor.

Lorrigan has given back to his community by doing volunteer work through his

church and the National Honor Society, coaching youth basketball in the summer and

winter, and tutoring math twice a week.

After high school, Lorrigan plans to attend college to pursue a degree in

Mechanical Engineering.

H-CLUB VARSITY ATHLETES WORK WITH CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL TO GO "ABOVE THE INFLUENCE"

Our H-Club Varsity Athletes spent Tuesday at Central Middle School working with students to

remember to stay "Above the Influence". The athletes put together three different activities for the

middle school students. One group had posters about why they were staying above the influence

and had the kids talk about why they wanted to stay above the influence. Another group was running

a trivia about drugs and alcohol, and some of the harms they can do to your body. The last group

was working with the drunk goggles and having students put them on, and try to do basic functions.

Everything went really well and the Central kids were very interested in each activity!

HUHS FRESHMEN COHORT PRAIRIE PROJECT

The Frosh Cohort students spent a few weeks tackling the challenge of creating a virtual/interactive tour of the

Central Middle School Prairie. The Hartford Rotary Club has a sign out at the entrance of the prairie, but there

are no handouts/fliers/maps/field guides for visitors to use to learn about organisms out in the prairie. Seven

groups of Cohort students used their ecology skills and technology skills to bring the experience into the 21st

century. Each team used GPS technology to create an interactive and informative map. Each team then

identified species of the prairie and their interactions. They studied populations and incorporated a wellness

component for their Health class.

The final task was to present their interactive web page to a panel of community members including Rotarians,

a local ecologist, and HUHS administrators. The thing that struck everyone involved was just how extensive

and impressive of a project these high school freshmen were able to accomplish before they were done with

the first quarter. Each student should be very proud of their collective efforts. As teachers, we cannot wait to

see how high the students can keep pushing this bar.

STUDENT COUNCIL POWDER PUFF GAME RAISES MONEY FOR HARTFORD FOOD PANTRY

The HUHS Student Council recently presented the Hartford Food Pantry with a monetary donation of $2270.50

and almost 400 canned food items. The Food Pantry was the beneficiary of the annual Powder Puff football

games held during the homecoming week. This year, in efforts to raise more money and food donations, the

Student Council expanded the event to include all grade levels. The JV game featured the Sophomore class

versus the Freshman class, and the premier Varsity game featured the Junior class versus the Senior class.
